Cagayan State University (CSU) continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainable agriculture through research initiatives, farmer training, and partnerships aimed at improving food production and supporting local communities. Recently, CSU inaugurated a five-hectare research orchard at its Lal-lo Campus. The orchard will serve as a learning and research hub where experts and students can study crop adaptability, productivity, and economic performance using Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Officer-in-Charge President Arthur G. Ibañez said the project aims to increase crop yields while promoting climate-resilient farming practices that can benefit farmers and partner communities in the long run. The initiative is supported by the Local Government of Lal-lo and several national agencies, including the Bureau of Plant Industry – National Seed Quality Control Services, regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture, Commission on Higher Education, and the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center. Through the orchard, CSU plans to conduct experimental studies, training activities, and extension services focused on responsible land management and sustainable farming practices. In line with its push for sustainable food production, CSU’s Lasam Campus also launched a cacao farming and processing program in Silagan, Allacapan, Cagayan. The initiative equips farmers and community partners with practical knowledge on cacao cultivation, postharvest processing, and value-adding opportunities. It also complements the goals of the research orchard by encouraging tree-growing initiatives and climate-resilient agricultural practices. CSU has also strengthened its agricultural programs through a long-term partnership with the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC). The two institutions signed a 25-year Memorandum of Agreement on Jan. 30, 2026, at the CSU Hotel in Andrews Campus. Under the agreement, a PCC Research and Development Station will continue operating at the CSU Piat Campus. The partnership was formalized by PCC Executive Director Liza G. Battad and CSU OIC President Ibañez to support research and development efforts in carabao breeding, dairy enterprise, biotechnology, animal health, and forage systems. Through this collaboration, PCC will maintain its research and production facility at the Piat Campus, while CSU will provide institutional support through land use, facilities, academic integration, and research and extension programs. The partnership aims to help improve livestock productivity, strengthen farmers’ livelihoods, and contribute to long-term food security. As an academic institution, CSU continues to promote the country’s Sustainable Development Goals by supporting innovation and research in agriculture. The university envisions becoming a global center of excellence in the arts, culture, agriculture and fisheries, and the sciences while helping communities build a more sustainable future.
