LEGAZPI CITY — A regional agriculture network has teamed up with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) to help farmers and fisherfolk in Bicol gain better access to useful information, new technologies, and updates that can improve their livelihood. The Bicol Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (BCAARRD) recently signed a memorandum of agreement with PIA to strengthen the sharing of knowledge and innovations related to agriculture and aquatic resources. BCAARRD Director Lester Narvaez said the partnership will make it easier for research institutions to bring their technologies and discoveries directly to the people who need them most—farmers and fisherfolk in the region. According to Narvaez, the collaboration will help communities access modern farming and fishing technologies that can boost productivity and improve overall capacity in the agriculture and aquatic sectors. BCAARRD is a regional network composed of more than 22 member institutions, including government agencies, universities, and private organizations. The group works together to promote sustainable agriculture, effective resource management, and the transfer of new technologies to local communities. Meanwhile, PIA Regional Head Ramil Marianito said the partnership is an important step in supporting the growth of Bicol’s agriculture sector. He explained that the collaboration will serve as a bridge that connects scientific research and innovations with farmers and fisherfolk on the ground. “Through proper information dissemination, we can help our agricultural and aquatic sectors become more productive, resilient to disasters, and globally competitive,” Marianito said. He also emphasized that timely and accurate information plays a critical role in agriculture. “In farming, timing is everything. Reliable and real-time information can help farmers avoid climate risks and reduce potential losses in the market,” he added. The partnership also aims to promote better practices in farming, fishing, and resource management through accessible information platforms. Following the signing of the agreement, the first episode of the radio program “AgriTalks” was aired through PIA Bicol’s radio stations and Facebook pages. The program features discussions about agricultural research, technology, and innovations, as well as interviews with experts and stakeholders who share insights to help local communities address challenges in the sector. “AgriTalks” is hosted by Professors Edgar Barrameda and Anacito Dematera and airs every first and third Thursday of the month at 11 a.m. The program aims to keep farmers and fisherfolk informed while promoting knowledge-sharing across the region.
