PhilMech to Showcase Philippines’ Sustainable Farm Mechanization Practices to Tanzania

GUIMBA, Nueva Ecija – The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) is set to share the country’s best practices in sustainable agricultural mechanization with Tanzania starting next month.

PhilMech Director Dionisio Alvindia said representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Tanzanian scientists are expected to arrive in the Philippines in the last week of April.

He added that Filipino experts will also travel to Tanzania by June to strengthen collaboration and exchange knowledge on farm mechanization.

According to Alvindia, Tanzania is particularly interested in learning from the Philippines’ approach to sustainable agricultural mechanization and how these practices can be adapted to their local conditions.

The initiative aims to help Tanzania improve its relatively low level of mechanization in the rice sector, which is a key indicator of agricultural modernization.

Following the exchange visits, the Philippines is expected to formalize its partnership with Tanzania through a memorandum of agreement after PhilMech experts conduct their field collaboration in June.

Meanwhile, Alvindia noted that the Philippines continues to make progress toward its mechanization goals, with the current level reaching 2.9 horsepower per hectare (hp/ha).

This marks an improvement from 2.78 hp/ha in 2025, 2.68 hp/ha in 2022, and 2.31 hp/ha in 2013, bringing the country closer to the mechanization levels of its Southeast Asian neighbors.

The Marcos administration is targeting a mechanization level of 3.40 hp/ha under the amended Rice Tariffication Law, supported by the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund.
