Lawmaker pushes food resilience plan to stabilize supply, prices amid fuel crisis

MANILA – Jude Acidre of the Tingog Party-list has called for the urgent rollout of a comprehensive Food Resilience Plan to safeguard local food production and keep supply and prices stable amid rising fuel costs.

In a statement, Acidre warned that the ongoing fuel crisis extends beyond energy and transportation, posing a serious threat to food security as it drives up production costs for farmers and fishers.

He noted that increasing fuel prices are making it more difficult for producers to sustain their operations. As production slows, the effects ripple across the economy—leading to tighter supply, higher food prices, and greater vulnerability for Filipino households.

Acidre cautioned that without immediate intervention, the situation could escalate into a full-blown food crisis.

Among the key measures he proposed is the provision of targeted fuel subsidies for farmers and fishers to ease operational costs and maintain productivity. He also urged the government to fast-track investments in alternative energy solutions for agriculture and fisheries, such as solar-powered irrigation systems and energy-efficient technologies, to reduce dependence on volatile fuel prices.

In addition, he emphasized the need to improve access to farm inputs, credit, post-harvest facilities, and stronger farm-to-market linkages to boost local food production.

The lawmaker also highlighted the importance of establishing strategic food reserves and strengthening logistics systems to ensure stable supply chains during external disruptions. He further called for closer coordination among energy, agriculture, and economic agencies to deliver a unified and responsive approach that protects both producers and consumers.

Acidre stressed that the current fuel situation underscores a critical reality: rising fuel costs directly threaten food security, making it essential for the government to prioritize support for farmers and fishers.
