Northern Samar to provide fuel aid to 548 fisherfolk amid rising oil prices

TACLOBAN CITY – A total of 548 fisherfolk in Northern Samar are set to benefit from the fuel subsidy program of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Eastern Visayas, in coordination with the provincial government.

According to the Provincial Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office (PEDIPO), all recipients are registered under the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture, the Municipal Fisherfolk Registration, and the Boat Registration systems.

The initial rollout on Monday saw 130 fisherfolk receive assistance at the provincial capitol gym, with each beneficiary receiving a one-time fuel subsidy card valued at PHP3,000. The aid is intended to help motorized boat owners maintain their fishing operations amid rising fuel costs.

Early recipients came from the municipalities of Catarman, Bobon, and Mondragon, with further distributions planned for next week.

PEDIPO head Jhon Allen Berbon explained that the program is designed to boost the productivity of fisherfolk by providing financial support to those whose livelihood heavily depends on fuel for fishing activities.
