Upgraded Irrigation System Boosts Farm Productivity in Davao del Sur

DAVAO CITY — Farmers in the town of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur are seeing improved irrigation and farm productivity following the upgrade of the Blucon-Albatana Communal Irrigation System (CIS).

Covering around 300 hectares of farmland, the rehabilitated system now delivers more efficient and reliable water distribution, supporting agricultural activities and promoting sustainable farming practices in the area.

Dexter Tinapay, division manager of the National Irrigation Administration–Davao del Sur Irrigation Management Office (NIA DDS-IMO), said the project enhances water regulation through key upgrades, including the replacement of the sluice gate and retrofitting of its shelter.

The project was funded under the Repair-CIS 2025 program and is now managed by the Albatana Blucon Malabos Communal Irrigators Association Inc.

Tinapay emphasized the importance of collaboration in sustaining the system, urging the association to prioritize regular maintenance, including desilting and off-season upkeep, to ensure long-term functionality.

For local farmers, the upgrade has made a tangible difference. Association president Danilo Omagtang expressed gratitude for the project, noting its impact on their livelihoods and farming operations.

He acknowledged that being selected as a beneficiary among many irrigators’ associations in the province is a significant opportunity that they intend to maximize.

The NIA said such initiatives are part of its broader efforts to strengthen agricultural resilience and improve the productivity and sustainability of farming communities across the region.
