SAN JUAN CITY — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday led an inspection at Agora Market alongside officials from the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to monitor the prices and availability of food and essential goods.
During the visit, the President and agency officials examined the market’s “timbanagan ng bayan” (public weighing scale), Bantay Presyo board, and various sections including fish, meat, poultry, fruits, and vegetables to ensure fair pricing and sufficient supply.
The initiative comes as the government intensifies efforts to stabilize prices amid rising tensions in the Middle East, which could drive up inflation due to increased fuel and transport costs.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said that while some price increases may be expected due to higher operating costs, unfair practices such as hoarding and profiteering will not be tolerated.
He noted that current monitoring shows an adequate supply of rice and other essential food items. The government has also secured key agricultural inputs and continues to provide support to farmers to help manage production costs and prevent sharp increases in food prices.
The DA and DTI said they are consolidating price data from markets and supply chains nationwide. If evidence of unjustified price hikes or violations involving basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPCs) is confirmed, authorities are ready to implement measures such as price ceilings in line with existing laws.
Meanwhile, Trade Secretary Cristina A. Roque recently met with 21 major manufacturers, who committed to maintaining current prices of BNPC items for 30 to 60 days following discussions held on March 16, 2026.
Roque welcomed the manufacturers’ commitment, emphasizing that continued coordination between the government and private sector is crucial to keeping essential goods affordable and ensuring fair pricing for Filipino consumers.
