More than 300 agriculturists in the Cordillera Administrative Region have undergone training on modern agricultural technologies aimed at improving food production and sustainability.
The participants attended a three-day regional convention in Baguio City organized by the Philippine Association of Agriculturists, where they updated their technical knowledge and earned continuing professional development (CPD) units required by the Professional Regulation Commission.
According to PAA regional president Gerardo Banawa, the convention not only helps participants meet licensing requirements but also equips them with new tools and strategies to enhance agricultural productivity.
A key focus of the training was the integration of Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies in farming. Banawa emphasized that agriculture is rapidly shifting toward computer-based and data-driven systems designed to increase crop yields and efficiency.
He underscored the importance of collaboration between government and private sectors to achieve food security and sufficiency, noting that agriculturists play a crucial role in bridging innovations to farmers through local government units.
By applying updated practices—such as selecting appropriate crop varieties and improving the use of fertilizers and pesticides—agriculturists can help ensure better harvests and more sustainable farming systems.
The regional PAA chapter, established nearly a decade ago, continues to support professional development through conventions and training programs. These initiatives also help members complete the required 30 CPD units needed to renew their professional licenses.
Banawa added that strengthening the agricultural workforce is essential in addressing ongoing challenges such as climate change while ensuring long-term food security.
“Agriculture will always remain vital as long as people need food,” he said, stressing the need to continuously modernize the sector.
