Negros city rolls out free transport for farm goods amid rising fuel costs

The local government of Guihulngan City is providing free transportation for farmers to bring their produce to the city proper, aiming to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices and prevent possible food shortages.

According to Krystle Jade Bato of the Department of Trade and Industry, the initiative helps cut farmers’ transport expenses while ensuring a steady food supply within the city.

The program also encourages farmers to sell directly in Guihulngan instead of transporting their goods to traders in Bacolod City, keeping more supply available locally. Farmers who wish to avail of the service may coordinate with the city agriculture office.

In addition, the local government has been organizing flea markets at least twice a week, allowing residents to buy vegetables, fruits, and other farm products at lower prices by eliminating middlemen.

The initiative was discussed during a recent meeting led by Mayor Filomeno Reyes, where officials tackled the impact of rising fuel prices on food costs and basic commodities.

The DTI was invited to brief local officials on oil price regulations, fuel price monitoring, and the expected economic effects of the ongoing Middle East tensions, which have contributed to the surge in global oil prices.

With these measures, the city government aims to protect both farmers’ incomes and consumers’ access to affordable food during a period of economic uncertainty.
