DA Chief Warns of Legal Action vs. Spreaders of Fake News

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. has signaled a tougher stance against individuals and groups spreading misinformation about the Department of Agriculture (DA), warning that legal action may be pursued against those making baseless claims.

The statement follows the cyber libel complaints he filed against lawyer Levito Baligod and former Congressman Rizaldy Co, which he said should serve as a clear warning against the spread of unfounded accusations targeting the agency.

Tiu Laurel emphasized that while public scrutiny is vital in a democracy, allegations must be rooted in truth and evidence. Claims that mislead the public and damage institutional credibility, he said, cannot go unchecked.

“This is also, in a way, a reminder to everybody: tell the truth,” the agriculture chief said, adding that he does not consider himself litigious. “If you plan to malign us in the DA, make sure there is at least some basis in fact—not pure fabrication.”

He also addressed recent accusations from a farmers’ group criticizing the efforts of Food Terminal Inc. and Planters Products Inc. to provide more affordable rice options. Tiu Laurel dismissed the claims as inaccurate and misleading, noting that the department is considering legal remedies to set the record straight.

“All those allegations are wrong, so we may consider legal action so the truth can come out,” he said.

The DA chief further questioned the credibility of the group, pointing out that its publicly circulated statement was unsigned—raising concerns about accountability and transparency.

In recent months, the DA has intensified efforts to stabilize rice prices by mobilizing state-linked firms to offer lower-cost alternatives, part of a broader strategy to cushion consumers from rising costs amid increasing inflation driven by higher oil prices.

Tiu Laurel’s remarks reflect a more assertive approach by the department in addressing misinformation, as it works to protect both public trust and the integrity of its programs during a critical period for food security.
