Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. assured the public on Thursday that the country’s food supply remains stable, despite concerns over increasing oil prices driven by tensions in the Middle East.
He emphasized that there is no immediate threat to food availability, noting that supplies are sufficient in the coming months. According to him, current projections show steady supply levels through June and even into July, supported by strong inventories and ongoing harvests.
Rice, the country’s primary staple, continues to play a key role in maintaining stability. The National Food Authority currently holds around 400,000 metric tons of buffer stock—enough to feed the population for about 10 days. This is further reinforced by the peak harvest season and expected imports.
To help manage prices, the Department of Agriculture is intensifying its monitoring efforts. Measures under consideration include tighter oversight of rice prices, potential limits on imported rice, and expanding access to affordable options through Food Terminal Inc. and Planters Products Inc..
Other food sectors are also showing positive supply conditions. Vegetable production remains steady due to the ongoing planting and harvest cycle. Meanwhile, cold storage facilities are well-stocked with imported pork, and the local swine population continues to recover. Supplies of corn, sugar, and onions are likewise stable as they remain in season.
However, officials acknowledged that global developments could still influence local prices. Rising oil costs may increase transportation and logistics expenses, potentially leading to slight price adjustments.
Assistant Secretary Genevieve Guevarra confirmed that the government’s P20 rice initiative will continue until June 2028, following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.. She added that the program ensures consumers receive quality rice sourced from local farmers.
Overall, while global oil price volatility presents some challenges, the country’s current supply levels and agricultural cycle are helping to mitigate potential disruptions. The government remains focused on maintaining steady supply and preventing significant price increases.
