DAVAO CITY — Fisheries production in the Davao Region declined by five percent in 2025, according to a report released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA-11).
Data showed total output reached 61,290.97 metric tons (MT), down from 64,483.43 MT in 2024.
The decline was largely driven by a sharp drop in Davao del Sur, which recorded the steepest decrease among provinces at 40.8 percent. Its production fell from 22,814.52 MT in 2024 to 13,517.57 MT in 2025.
Despite the overall downturn, several provinces posted gains. Davao del Norte registered the highest increase at 4.9 percent, while Davao Oriental grew by 4.3 percent, Davao Occidental by 2.6 percent, and Davao de Oro by 2.3 percent.
PSA-11 noted that the significant contraction in Davao del Sur offset the modest growth seen in other areas.
In terms of regional share, Davao Oriental contributed the largest portion at 40.7 percent, followed by Davao del Sur with 22.1 percent and Davao Occidental with 18.8 percent. Davao City accounted for 7.4 percent, while Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro contributed 5.7 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, commercial fisheries production posted strong growth, increasing by 57.6 percent to 10,530.17 MT in 2025 from 6,679.97 MT in the previous year.
Davao Oriental dominated the subsector, producing 9,505.96 MT, up by 53.8 percent. Davao Occidental also recorded a modest increase of 4.5 percent.
However, Davao del Sur saw a significant decline of 65.9 percent in commercial fisheries output, while Davao City recorded a total of 724.61 MT.
According to PSA-11, commercial fisheries refer to fishing operations conducted beyond 15 kilometers from the shoreline using vessels weighing more than three gross tons.
Davao Oriental accounted for 90.3 percent of the region’s commercial fisheries production, followed by Davao City at 6.9 percent. Combined, the two areas contributed more than 97 percent of the regional total, highlighting the concentration of commercial fishing activity.
The fisheries sector is composed of four subsectors: commercial, marine municipal, inland municipal, and aquaculture.
PSA-11 added that its quarterly surveys provide data on production volume and value by species at national, regional, and provincial levels, which are used in assessing agricultural performance and compiling national economic accounts.
