ILOILO CITY — Iloilo City Lone District Representative Julienne Baronda is calling for stronger support for the Kadiwa ng Pangulo program to help cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on basic commodity prices.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Baronda emphasized that increasing fuel prices driven by tensions in the Middle East could lead to higher food costs, affecting both consumers and producers.
She noted that Kadiwa centers offer agricultural products at lower prices compared to public markets, providing a practical alternative for households facing rising expenses.
“If we strengthen the Kadiwa, we are giving consumers more options. At the same time, we also support our local farmers,” Baronda said.
The lawmaker added that the initiative is especially relevant as some transient vendors from Iloilo province are currently adjusting to changes in operations at the Iloilo City public market.
Baronda stressed the importance of ensuring stable supply to prevent spikes in the prices of basic goods across the city and province.
She is scheduled to meet with officials of the Department of Agriculture in Western Visayas (DA-6) to discuss additional support for Kadiwa and related programs.
The Kadiwa ng Pangulo program, a flagship initiative of the Marcos administration, aims to address rising food prices by connecting farmers, fisherfolk, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) directly to consumers. By shortening the supply chain, the program helps reduce costs while improving market access for local producers.
