LAOAG CITY – Residents in Ilocos Sur flocked to the National Food Authority (NFA) warehouse in Bantay on Wednesday following the resumption of the ₱20 per kilogram rice program under the Department of Agriculture’s Benteng Bigas Meron Na (BBM) initiative.
The affordable rice scheme, aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, was met with enthusiasm from beneficiaries.
Pedrito Esquero, a senior citizen from Vigan City, expressed gratitude for the program, saying it greatly helps sustain his family’s daily needs.
Mary Ann Rafal, a resident of Pantay Daya, also welcomed the initiative, noting that rising market prices have made rice difficult to afford. She joined other beneficiaries, including housewives, drivers, and elderly residents, who lined up early at the warehouse.
Meanwhile, Emilia Riodil of San Vicente and Mercy Pugrad of Cabaroan shared that they immediately went to the nearest NFA outlet upon learning that stocks were available.
According to a public advisory, the Food Terminal Incorporated, under the Department of Agriculture, is leading the distribution of the ₱20/kg rice. The program is currently available at NFA warehouses in Bantay (Ilocos Sur), Laoag (Ilocos Norte), and Bangued (Abra).
Qualified beneficiaries include senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, indigents or 4Ps members, farmers, fisherfolk, and public transport drivers and operators.
Engineer Jonathan Corpuz, NFA Ilocos Norte provincial manager, said farmers may purchase up to 50 kilograms monthly for five months, while other eligible individuals can avail of at least 30 kilograms per month.
