MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) clarified on Friday that farmers and fisherfolk are permitted to purchase petroleum products using portable containers for their operational needs.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. assured that the policy aims to ensure continued access to fuel for those working in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
He explained that farmers and fishers may use containers such as jerry cans and drums when buying fuel for equipment like tractors, irrigation pumps, fishing boats, and other marine machinery.
The Department of Energy (DOE) guidelines recognize these purchases as legitimate, provided they are used strictly for productive activities and comply with regulations against hoarding and unfair fuel distribution.
Buyers are required to present proof of need, such as business permits, certifications, or purchase orders, to confirm that the fuel will be used for agricultural or fishing operations.
To enforce these rules, government monitoring teams composed of law enforcement personnel and local government units have been deployed to gasoline stations nationwide.
