Marcos orders opening of more bypass roads to cut fuel costs, ease traffic

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to accelerate the opening of bypass roads nationwide to help reduce fuel consumption and ease traffic amid rising oil prices.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the initiative will not only lower gasoline use but also improve the delivery of goods and services.

He cited the newly opened Lipa–Padre Garcia Bypass Road in Batangas as a key example. The route serves as an alternative to the Manila–Batangas Road and Lipa–Rosario Road, helping decongest traffic in Lipa City.

“The President has emphasized the need to fast-track infrastructure projects so we can open more roads and reduce traffic congestion,” Dizon said. “These bypass roads provide significant relief by cutting travel time and fuel consumption.”

In addition, Marcos has ordered the ускорation of farm-to-market road (FMR) projects to support agricultural communities.

During an inspection of an FMR project in Barangay New Casay, Braulio E. Dujali, Davao del Norte, Dizon said completing the remaining 1.9-kilometer stretch will reduce travel time for farmers transporting produce from 30 minutes to just 15 minutes.

He added that even partial completion of the road has already lowered fuel costs for farmers, with further savings expected once the project is finished, benefiting communities up to Tagum City.

The DPWH also committed to addressing the lack of riprap and drainage systems in the area to prevent flooding and protect farms and livelihoods.
