LAOAG CITY – The provincial government of Ilocos Norte has expanded its support for farmers by offering free hauling services alongside fuel subsidy assistance to help ease the impact of rising fuel costs.
Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos announced the initiative following the delivery of 1.8 tons of red onions and 1 ton of white onions from farmers in Pasuquin to the newly opened trading center in Barangay Bil-loca, Batac City.
She said the program is designed to sustain agricultural productivity, support farmers’ livelihoods, and cushion the effects of increasing fuel prices on the local economy.
The provincial government, through the Ilocos Norte Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Center, has long been assisting farmers and fisherfolk by providing farm inputs, machinery, and market access for their produce—even prior to the current global crisis.
The expanded fuel subsidy program is open to farmers registered under the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture, with priority given to those who currently have standing crops to ensure proper irrigation and support through harvest.
This initiative complements the national government’s fuel assistance program, which is expected to be rolled out in the province within the month.
Farmers interested in availing of the free hauling service may coordinate with the Provincial Agriculture Office in Laoag City.
Farmer-leader Wilfredo Valdez expressed gratitude for the continued government support, noting that such assistance is crucial in helping farmers sustain their operations during challenging times.
