Pangilinan seeks probe into cold storage use amid farmer concerns

MANILA – Senator Francis Pangilinan is pushing for an investigation into the use of cold storage facilities following concerns from the agriculture sector over limited access for local farmers.

In a statement, Pangilinan said reports indicate that imported goods are occupying significant cold storage space, making it difficult for farmers to store their harvest. This situation could lead to increased post-harvest losses and force producers to sell at lower prices.

The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform, which he chairs, plans to summon cold storage operators and traders to a hearing to examine the issue.

Cold storage facilities play a vital role in preserving agricultural products and stabilizing supply and prices. However, farmers have raised concerns about high storage fees and alleged preferential treatment favoring large traders and importers.

Pangilinan pointed out that onion farmers, in particular, may be disadvantaged, claiming some are unable to access storage and are compelled to sell their produce at a loss.

He emphasized that proper storage can extend the shelf life of onions to six to nine months, while lack of access leads to faster spoilage.

The senator also flagged concerns over continued onion importation during the local harvest season, warning that this practice, combined with restricted storage access, could further undermine local producers.

He cautioned that if evidence of unfair practices emerges, cases related to agricultural economic sabotage may be pursued against those involved.
