House fast-tracks fuel crisis response with multi-panel hearing

MANILA – The House of Representatives is set to hold a high-level joint hearing on Wednesday, bringing together 13 key committees in a coordinated effort to accelerate measures addressing rising fuel costs and their impact on Filipinos.

The hearing, scheduled at 9:30 a.m. at the People’s Center Building, will be led by Marikina Rep. Miro Quimbo, chair of the Committee on Ways and Means. It marks the first formal session of the expanded panel tasked with crafting a unified legislative response to the global fuel crisis driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Joining the discussions are leaders of major House committees covering energy, agriculture, appropriations, fisheries, economic affairs, foreign relations, labor, transportation, and other sectors to ensure a comprehensive approach.

Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III has directed the committees to consolidate data, closely coordinate with the Executive branch, and develop concrete policy actions that provide both immediate relief and long-term solutions.

The hearing will focus on the country’s oil supply and energy security, as well as the broader economic effects of ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Cabinet officials, economic managers, and regulators have been invited to brief lawmakers and present policy options. Representatives from key financial institutions and international organizations are also expected to participate.

According to Quimbo, the goal of the joint hearing is to align legislative measures with ongoing executive actions and fast-track solutions that will protect vulnerable sectors, including targeted assistance, fiscal support, and long-term reforms to reduce dependence on global oil markets.
