LEGAZPI CITY – The provincial government of Albay is expanding efforts to improve food security and promote self-sufficiency through a seedling distribution program led by its agriculture office.
The initiative, implemented by the Albay Provincial Agriculture Office (APAO), provides free seeds and ready-to-plant seedlings to farmers, fisherfolk, and even urban households, encouraging residents to grow food in backyards, containers, and small garden spaces.
Provincial Agriculturist Daryl John Buenconsejo said the program is designed to help families maintain a steady food supply while creating opportunities for additional income.
“The program supports food security by providing free seeds and planting materials. We encourage households to grow vegetables that can both feed their families and generate livelihood,” he said.
Buenconsejo noted that with rising fuel and energy costs, home gardening offers a practical way to reduce expenses and lessen dependence on market-bought produce.
He encouraged residents to plant crops such as pechay, eggplant, okra, string beans, and sweet potato tops, which are easy to grow and provide nutritious food for daily consumption.
Beyond ensuring food availability, the initiative also opens income opportunities for families that can sell surplus harvests within their communities.
The program further promotes community participation, urging residents to take an active role in sustainable food production, especially during times of economic strain and emergencies.
“The government continues to implement programs that directly benefit Albayano families,” Buenconsejo said.
The seedling assistance program is part of the province’s broader strategy to ensure accessible, reliable, and nutritious food sources while advancing sustainable agricultural practices.
