Philippines Named Among 7 Priority Countries in US Food Assistance Program

MANILA — The Philippines has been identified as one of seven priority countries under a new international food assistance initiative of the United States, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Friday.

Joining Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ecuador, Morocco, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, the Philippines will be included in projects under the USDA’s Food for Progress program.

The initiative, implemented through the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), partners with eligible organizations to carry out field-based projects that support agricultural development, economic growth, and infrastructure improvements, while also promoting US agricultural trade.

Although specific funding allocations per country have yet to be disclosed, the program is expected to award up to USD226 million in total for fiscal year 2026. Individual projects will run for five years, with funding ranging from USD28 million to USD35 million each.

The program is primarily financed through the sale of US agricultural commodities in recipient countries, helping fund development initiatives while expanding market access.
