Galunggong landings in Navotas nearly double to 16,165 MT in March

Galunggong (round scad) landings at the Navotas Fish Port Complex surged to 16,165.52 metric tons (MT) in March 2026—almost twice the 8,161.92 MT recorded in the same month last year—highlighting a strong peak-season performance driven by better fishing conditions and recovery following the closed season, according to the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA).

The PFDA said the sharp increase reflects the continued strength of the country’s fisheries sector, which remains vital for food security and the livelihoods of fishing communities and industry players. The peak season for galunggong is expected to run through July 2026.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. noted that the improved figures show the long-term impact of consistent fisheries management. He said a decade of enforcing the closed fishing season policy has helped rebuild fish stocks, resulting in more stable and higher catch volumes.

Of the total March landings, shortfin scad made up 9,731.68 MT, while bigeye scad contributed 6,433.84 MT.

The PFDA attributed the increase to several factors, including the effective enforcement of the three-month closed fishing season from November 1 to January 31, which allowed fish populations to recover. Environmental conditions, such as the early onset of El Niño, may have also influenced fish migration patterns and improved catch efficiency. Favorable conditions during vessel deployment in late January further supported the higher landings.

PFDA General Manager Glen A. Pangapalan emphasized the importance of efficient port operations in managing the surge. He said the Navotas Fish Port Complex handled the increased volume smoothly, ensuring proper unloading and timely distribution across the supply chain.

He added that continued investments in cold storage, logistics, and post-harvest facilities are crucial to sustaining gains, minimizing losses, and improving product quality and returns for stakeholders.

Industry data indicate that the strong March performance coincides with the start of the galunggong peak season, which is expected to continue until July. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is set to release a more detailed scientific analysis comparing year-on-year conditions.

The sustained rise in supply underscores improving resource conditions and the value of coordinated fisheries management, as stakeholders monitor whether the momentum will continue in the coming months.
