La Union farm thrives as model of sustainable agriculture and women empowerment

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when livelihoods across the Philippines were upended, one woman in La Union turned uncertainty into opportunity.

For Veverly Uyaan, the establishment of Vel Sierra Integrated Farm in Balaoan on September 7, 2020 marked the beginning of a purpose-driven venture rooted in resilience, sustainability, and community empowerment.

What started as a small-scale mushroom enterprise producing oyster and volvariella varieties has grown into a stable source of income and the backbone of her family’s livelihood.

A model grounded in sustainability

More than a typical farm, Vel Sierra demonstrates how sustainable agriculture can drive both economic recovery and environmental stewardship—key priorities in national development.

Using a “seed-to-market” approach, the farm follows circular agriculture principles that minimize waste and maximize resources. Spent mushroom substrates are recycled into organic fertilizers and combined with other farm by-products to enrich the soil.

This closed-loop system supports the cultivation of crops such as sugarcane, papaya, native chili, and high-value seedlings—proving that integrated farming can boost productivity while reducing reliance on expensive chemical inputs.

By promoting organic practices and resource efficiency, the farm contributes to broader goals of food security, climate resilience, and sustainable rural development.

Women at the heart of progress

Uyaan’s journey also underscores the vital role of women in agriculture. She describes women as both the “heart” and “compass” of the household—central to both livelihood and long-term decision-making.

Her story reflects a broader truth: empowering women creates ripple effects that benefit entire communities. Beyond food production, women farmers play key roles in financial management, planning, and community leadership.

Balancing farm operations with family responsibilities, Uyaan exemplifies leadership grounded in care, accountability, and sustainability—values increasingly recognized in gender-responsive development programs nationwide.

From farm to community learning hub

Over time, Vel Sierra Integrated Farm has evolved into a learning site for farmers and aspiring agripreneurs.

Through partnerships with government agencies, the farm hosts training sessions for students, farmer groups, associations, and out-of-school youth, offering hands-on experience in sustainable farming and agribusiness.

“Our goal is to share knowledge not only within our community but also through partnerships with government agencies,” Uyaan said, noting that the farm has already trained various sectors on practical agricultural interventions.

These efforts help strengthen grassroots capacity and foster collaboration—key ingredients in building resilient farming communities.

Inspiring the next generation

Beyond providing livelihood, the farm is helping reshape how young people view agriculture.

By showing that farming can be innovative, sustainable, and profitable, Vel Sierra encourages the youth to see agriculture as a viable and meaningful career—not just a fallback option.

This shift is crucial in addressing the country’s aging farmer population and securing the future of the agriculture sector.

A story with national impact

Uyaan shared her journey during the Gender and Development Convention held in the Ilocos Region as part of the National Women’s Month.

Her experience reflects key national development themes—women’s empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and community resilience—demonstrating how small, community-based initiatives can support broader goals such as food security, inclusive growth, and climate adaptation.

Cultivating resilience and hope

From a modest mushroom venture to a model of inclusive and sustainable development, Vel Sierra Integrated Farm stands as proof that crisis can spark innovation.

Through a mission rooted in compassion, knowledge-sharing, and sustainability, Uyaan has grown more than crops—she has nurtured resilience, empowered communities, and planted seeds for a more sustainable future.
