MANILA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) said the ongoing modernization of fish port facilities in Surigao City is expected to create more economic opportunities and strengthen the local fisheries sector.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. made the statement after inspecting the two major port projects under the phased development of the Surigao City Fish Port.
He emphasized that upgrading fisheries infrastructure will benefit both producers and consumers by improving efficiency across the supply chain.
“Investments in proper handling, storage, and support facilities will strengthen the fisheries value chain and generate more economic opportunities,” Tiu Laurel said.
The first phase of the project, worth PHP193.6 million, includes the construction of slope protection covering 7,500 square meters, along with a 10-by-70-meter pier equipped with mooring and fendering systems. Support facilities such as a market hall and an administration building are also part of the development.
As of March 31, Phase I is 56 percent complete and remains on track for completion in October. Once finished, it is expected to enhance fish landing and trading capacity in the area.
The second phase, valued at PHP172.39 million, focuses on improving fish preservation and value-adding processes. It will include refrigeration systems, an ice-making facility, cold storage, commercial spaces, and a powerhouse.
Additional features include blast freezers, backup power systems, fire protection, closed-circuit television, and communications infrastructure.
Currently 32 percent complete, Phase II aims to ensure better product quality and longer shelf life for fishery products, ultimately increasing their market value.
