Bicol Student Leaders Speak Out on Dynasties, Education, and Misinformation

LEGAZPI CITY – Student finalists of the Ten Outstanding Students of Bicol (TOSB) tackled key national issues such as political dynasties, misinformation, and the country’s education challenges during a leadership forum designed to shape socially aware future leaders.

TOSB Chair January Dechavez said the forum provides a platform for students to demonstrate not only academic excellence but also their understanding of critical national concerns.

“We want them to clearly express their positions on issues that affect the country and show that they are ready to take on leadership roles,” Dechavez said.

During the discussion, most of the student leaders voiced opposition to political dynasties. Janella Sallena of Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges pointed out that dynasties can contribute to corruption and limit equal access to public office.

“The Philippines is a democracy, and leadership opportunities should be open to all,” she said.

Out of 20 finalists, 19 opposed political dynasties, while one participant, Frank Pelemiano of Partido State University, suggested evaluating leaders based on performance rather than pushing for a complete ban.

On education, Jona Abo Perciana of Ligao Community College highlighted her initiative, “Project Bungkaras,” which promotes literacy among students from Grades 1 to 10 in partnership with the Department of Education. She emphasized that illiteracy remains a key factor in persistent poverty.

Meanwhile, fellow finalist Ira Joana Sarsozo noted that factual literacy in the Bicol Region stands at 67 percent, underscoring the need for stronger educational interventions.

The forum also addressed misinformation, with Joy Cabaltea of Central Bicol State University of Agriculture-Sipocot presenting “Alimbukad,” a project that trains aspiring journalists in fact-checking. Harold Calacday of Ligao Community College added that student publications play a crucial role in teaching communities how to verify information.

Dechavez encouraged the youth to actively contribute to nation-building by using their knowledge and leadership skills in their communities.

Winners of the TOSB search will each receive PHP50,000 and will serve as ambassadors for one year, promoting leadership, civic engagement, and social responsibility.
