The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has released ₱1.5 billion of its ₱2.5-billion relief package for the transport sector, as the government steps up support amid rising fuel costs.
DOTr Acting Secretary Giovani Lopez said the funds have been distributed to public utility drivers, operators, and commuters through subsidies such as free rides and fare discounts. The announcement was made during the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.
To streamline payouts, the agency is using digital channels, with beneficiaries receiving assistance through banks and e-wallet platforms. The cashless system aims to reduce waiting times and prevent congestion at Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) offices.
Meanwhile, the ₱5,000 direct cash aid for drivers is being implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program. Beneficiaries include drivers of jeepneys, motorcycle taxis, Transport Network Vehicle Services, and UV Express units.
Beyond direct aid, the government is expanding its fuel subsidy programs to support both drivers and operators. Around 19,000 traditional and modern jeepneys, along with UV Express units, are also set to be included in the Net Service Contracting Program, which offers incentives and ensures service reliability.
Commuters are also benefiting from the initiative, with a 20% fare discount being implemented as part of broader relief efforts.
To ease the cost of transporting goods—particularly agricultural products—the government is rolling out additional measures. Starting April 20, agricultural delivery trucks registered with the Department of Agriculture will be granted toll-free access on major expressways.
Port fees for agricultural shipments have also been drastically reduced. From as much as ₱546 per shipment, fees have been lowered to just ₱1, helping cut logistics costs and stabilize food prices.
These combined measures reflect a whole-of-government approach to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices on both the transport sector and consumers.
