DA ramps up support measures to shield local food producers

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) is accelerating efforts to protect local food producers and consumers from the economic strain caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict, particularly the surge in fuel prices.

DA Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Arnel De Mesa said the agency is fast-tracking the distribution of fuel subsidies to farmers and fisherfolk affected by rising oil costs, which have driven up fertilizer and transportation expenses.

Acting on the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., the DA has already extended assistance to more than 100,000 beneficiaries, with more expected to be added as the program continues.

Beyond fuel subsidies, the DA has rolled out additional interventions. In Benguet, where higher fuel costs have disrupted transport and reduced trips, the agency deployed over 38 Kadiwa trucks to purchase farmers’ produce. Regional offices have also organized trade fairs to help boost sales and market access.

The DA is also urging local government units to support the “Sagip Saka” program, which enables them to procure goods directly from accredited farmers’ organizations, ensuring fair prices and stable supply.

To further ease logistical costs, the government has implemented toll fee exemptions for accredited DA truckers. This allows them to pass through major expressways such as SLEX, NLEX, and SCTEX without charges, significantly lowering transport expenses.

Meanwhile, the DA is preparing for the anticipated El Niño season in coordination with other government agencies. Measures under consideration include adjusting planting calendars and promoting crops that require less water to safeguard food production.

Despite potential challenges, De Mesa assured that the country maintains sufficient supply of basic commodities, with preparations ongoing to strengthen resilience.

The agency is also advancing solar-powered irrigation systems, which are expected to become fully operational by the end of the year, providing sustainable support to the agriculture sector.
