Young Farmers’ Challenge 2026 empowers next-generation agripreneurs

The recently concluded week-long 2026 Young Farmers’ Challenge (YFC) National Competition has once again expanded opportunities for young agricultural entrepreneurs to launch and grow their agri-fishery ventures through mentorship and competitive grants.

Now in its fifth year, the competition, held in Iloilo City from April 20 to 23, introduced new special awards, including the Social Innovation Award, Excellence in Product Packaging and Labeling, Indigenous Innovation Award, Young Regenerative Agriculture Award, and Agriculture Technology Development Award.

Participants competed under three major categories: Start-up for emerging ventures, Intercollegiate for student-led enterprises, and Upscale for businesses aiming to expand existing operations.

From 35 national start-up finalists, 15 winners each received Php 300,000. In the Upscale category, five out of 15 finalists were awarded Php 500,000, while three out of 14 intercollegiate finalists also received Php 500,000 each.

In a message delivered by DA Assistant Secretary for Agribusiness, Marketing, and Consumer Affairs Atty. Genevieve Velicaria-Guevarra, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. praised the winners, highlighting how the youth are transforming agriculture through innovative ideas and enterprise.

He emphasized that farming has evolved beyond traditional methods, now driven by technology, smart farming practices, digital platforms, and value-added products—demonstrating that the future of agriculture lies not only in cultivation but also in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Alongside the competition, a Summit and Business Conference brought together experienced agripreneurs, private sector representatives, non-government organizations, and YFC alumni to foster collaboration and expand professional networks.

Beyond financial support, the YFC Program continues to help young entrepreneurs scale their enterprises through mentoring, product promotion both locally and internationally, and access to broader markets and partnerships.

DA Undersecretary for High Value Crops Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero encouraged participants to sustain their passion, resilience, and drive for innovation.

She underscored that the program serves as a stepping stone toward larger markets, stronger partnerships, and greater responsibility, adding that the future of Philippine agriculture will ultimately be shaped by the people leading it forward.
