DA-13 identifies vulnerable Caraga farms ahead of El Niño

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Agriculture in the Caraga Region (DA-13) is taking proactive steps to reduce the potential impact of El Niño by mapping vulnerable rice and corn production areas across the region.

Gerlie Antipaso, DA-13 disaster risk reduction focal person, said the agency is currently consolidating data from rainfed municipalities to identify barangays most at risk. She noted that about 57 percent of rice farms in the region rely on rainfed systems, making them particularly susceptible to prolonged dry conditions. Farms located at the far end of irrigation systems are also considered high-risk.

As of April 15, DA-13 has recorded 17,228 hectares of rainfed rice farms and 1,897 hectares of upland rice areas. In addition, around 1,109 hectares of corn farms are situated in rainfed zones and near riverbanks, increasing their vulnerability.

To strengthen preparedness, the agency is procuring quality seeds to build buffer stocks. Currently, 1,720 bags of certified rice seeds and 1,950 bags of hybrid seeds are ready for distribution, with additional procurement underway. The bidding process for more corn seeds has also been completed to further support farmers.

DA-13 is likewise working with its engineering division to maximize existing impounding projects for water harvesting. These systems can capture rainwater from localized thunderstorms, helping mitigate the effects of the anticipated dry spell.

Antipaso noted that recent heavy rains in Butuan City and nearby areas due to localized thunderstorms highlight the importance of water harvesting as drought conditions persist.
