Negros Occidental Launches P1-Million Biofuel Innovation Challenge for College Students

BACOLOD CITY – The Provincial Government of Negros Occidental has launched a groundbreaking biofuel innovation competition offering a total prize pool of PHP 1 million to college student teams capable of developing scalable and sustainable biofuel systems that can help power communities, industries, and the province’s clean energy future.

Dubbed the Negros Occidental Energy Innovation Sprint (NOEIS), the competition seeks innovative solutions that can accelerate the development of renewable energy technologies while strengthening the province’s long-term energy security goals.

Apart from the substantial cash prizes, winning teams stand to gain significant commercial opportunities, including a one-year purchase order agreement and the possibility of becoming the primary producer and supplier of their proposed biofuel system. Participants will also receive valuable incubation support and mentorship from industry experts and technical partners.

Organizers emphasized that the initiative goes beyond a traditional science or engineering contest, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration among students from diverse academic backgrounds.

“Building a viable biofuel ecosystem requires expertise across multiple fields—from production and processing to logistics, enterprise development, sustainability, technology, and community engagement,” organizers said.

The competition is open to students from colleges and universities in disciplines such as Engineering and Technology, Agriculture and Fisheries, Business and Entrepreneurship, Information Technology and Data Science, Environmental Science, Communications and Media, and Public Policy and Social Sciences.

The province-wide challenge forms part of the provincial government’s broader renewable energy agenda under the SecuRE Negros long-term energy security program. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while promoting equitable and sustainable renewable energy solutions that will enhance power security across Negros Occidental.

To officially kick off the competition, organizers will conduct a preliminary orientation meeting on May 29, where interested schools, faculty advisers, and student representatives will be briefed on the competition mechanics, challenge framework, timelines, and participation guidelines.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is providing technical expertise for the program, while benefactors through the Office of Second District Board Member Arthur Christopher Marañon are supporting the competition.

The NOEIS is expected to serve as a catalyst for youth-driven innovation, fostering the next generation of renewable energy leaders and advancing Negros Occidental’s vision of a more sustainable and energy-secure future.
