In an effort to boost fisheries production in Region 2 (Cagayan Valley), the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the region and the local government unit of Allacapan in Cagayan province is promoting the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in building fish cages.

The HDPE fish cages are installed in Barangay Silagan's Small Water Impounding Project (SWIP).

BFAR Region 2 Director Angel Encarnacion said they have started promoting the use of HDPE, which is a solid and strong plastic, as building materials for fish cages.

Encarnacion explained that one unit of HDPE fish cage occupies 1 hectare of water area and can hold about 12,000 pieces of fish stocks.

The fish cage project will be managed and operated by the members of the Nappuaran Small Water Irrigation System Association led by its president Gilbert Talana.

The BFAR Region 2 office said the fisherfolk beneficiaries also received a similar project from the bureau in 2018.
